Portable Water Purifiers – Everything You Need To Know!

With all the advancements in portable water purifiers over the last few years, it is easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of products that you have available to you on the market today. Luckily, the selection of portable water filters can be separated into two main types: micron filter purifiers, and UV light purifiers.

Here’s what you need to know about both!

1. Micron Filters: these purify water by straining it through a series of filters to remove any bacteria and contaminants from the water. The efficiency of these filters is measured by how small in microns a particle would have to be to get through the filter.

A micron is one millionth of a meter, or about one 25,400th of an inch.

So a 3-micron filter would stop any particle larger than 3 microns, but anything smaller than 3 microns would slip through.

What you need to know about micron filters: look for a purifier that filters to under 1 micron.

Most bacteria are between 0.1-10 microns in size, but many purifiers will filter as small as 0.2 microns.

2. UV Light Filters: these purifiers are truly amazing! These devices kill harmful viruses, bacteria, and protozoa by using ultraviolet light to “fry” their DNA.

The process with these devices is usually to take a small wand of light and stick it into a receptacle of water for a certain amount of time (usually 15 seconds to a minute) in order to give the device time to kill the harmful contents of the water with UV rays.

What you need to know about UV purifiers: pay attention to how powerful the UV light from the device is.

The more powerful the UV emitter, the less time it will take to purify a glass of water. Each device should state how long it takes to purify a specified amount of water.

And finally, as with all water purifiers, make sure that the device you choose meets the E.P.A. standards for microbiological water purifiers. This information should always be on the product’s website.

If you have watched the advancements in water purification systems over the last couple of years, you know that there have been some great new steps in portable filter technology! Ever since Vestergaard Frandsen introduced the LifeStraw in 2005, it seems that there have been leaps and bounds made in the field of portable water filters.

But can they be trusted? Are commercial camping and survival water purifiers safe for you and your family?

Short answer: They can be, but know what you are buying!

Most portable water purifiers that are available to consumers measure their filtering abilities by how many microns their devices filter to. So if a purifier says that it has a 2.0 micron filter, it means that the filter will stop anything larger than 2 microns across, but anything smaller will slip through the filter.

A micron is one millionth of a meter, or about one 25,400th of an inch. For an idea of how small a micron really is, the period at the end of this sentence is between 60 and 65 microns across. That’s pretty small!

Bacteria, however, is even smaller, ranging from as large as 10 microns to as small as 0.1 microns.

So when looking to purchase a portable water purifier, look for as small a micron filter as possible! Many cheaper models have filters rated for 2 and 3 microns, where some top of the line filters are have filters as tight as 0.2 microns.

When the health of you and your family is involved, be careful not to compromise on safety for the sake of price. Look for only trusted names in portable water filters, like Katadyn and MSR. Some models even have a 2 filter system, so that the largest particles are absorbed in the first filter, extending the life of the main filter.

How To Pick Water Filter Pitchers - 3 Things You Need To Know Before You Buy

If you are reading this, you’ve probably already come to the realization that many others have: Using a home water filtration system will save you time and money! One of the cheapest, easiest ways to filter your drinking water at home is to use a water filter pitcher in your refrigerator. With so many different models and makers available to you, you have your work cut out for you when choosing one to buy. But before you buy one, here are 3 things you need to know about them to make a smart, economical pick.

1. Chlorine Level: This is number one for a reason! Chlorine is what gives tap water its bad taste and odor, which is probably the reason you are looking at water filtration in the first place. Water filter pitchers remove most of the chlorine in your water, giving it its clean, pure taste. Most filter pitchers remove between 92-99% of the chlorine in the water. You can find out the exact amount that a filter removes by looking at the specifications on it’s box or webpage. Remember, the more chlorine it filters, the cleaner the water will taste!

2. Fluoride Retention: Although you want to filter out most of the chemicals from the tap water, there is actually one that you want to keep –fluoride. Fluoride is vital to the health of your teeth, and water utility companies add it into the tap water so that you and I don’t have to take fluoride supplements. Many water filter pitchers will filter out the harmful chemicals from tap water but keep the useful fluoride in the water for you to drink. Check it out on the specs where you found the chlorine level count.

3. Replacement Filter Value: While the cheapest filter may initially seem to be the best deal, don’t be fooled! Not all replacement filters have the same lifespan. The lifespan of the replacement filters is usually in the 40-50 gallon range. To find the actual value of the filter, divide the price of the filter/number of gallons it can filter before replacement. This will give you an actual cost per gallon of water to effectively compare filter value.
